FAQ's
How do I register?
See the Sign Up page (Home page) on this website for current information and what you need to do to register your child(ren). Parents can register their child:
- Through Online Registration (credit card required)
- In person, at Mickey Cox School (Check or Cash) in mid-August (or other announced dates such as spring open house)
ALL NEW PLAYERS to the MCSC must submit a COPY of their birth certificate
What are registration fees?
Registration fees are $90 for all Mickey Cox Soccer Club players for the fall 2011 season. The MCSC keeps only about 40% of this fee (the rest goes to Clovis Junior Soccer League for field maintenance, scheduling, payment for referees). This registration fee helps the MCSC club pay for our various expenses (equipment, uniforms, etc.) that keep the MCSC successfully operating.
What can I do to help defray my soccer costs?
The Clovis Junior Soccer League provides 2 opportunities to help decrease your soccer costs:
- Parents can work at the Clovis Bingo Hall and earn credit to be applied toward their child's registration fees.
- During the summer, parents can buy fireworks scrip from CJSL. Parents in turn sell the scrip to friends, neighbors, and family, which can be redeemed for fireworks at the CJSL soccer booth. 30% of the total you sell is applied toward your child's soccer registration fee. Click here for more information.

What does U mean in front of the age?
U = under. For example "U/6" means the player is under the age of 6 by August 1st of the current seasonal year.
What is the youngest age that a child may play soccer?
A child must be the age of four by August 1st in order to play soccer.
What are the roster sizes?

| UNDER 6 | MIN 8 / MAX 10 |
| UNDER 8 | MIN 7 / MAX 11 |
| UNDER 10 | MIN 8 / MAX 12 |

WHAT DOES "FIRST COME - FIRST SERVED" MEAN?
TEAMS ARE FORMED ON A "FIRST COME - FIRST SERVED" BASIS, WHICH MEANS THAT TEAMS ARE FORMED BASED ON COACH AVAILABILITY AND SPACE AVAILABILITY. TEAMS ROSTER SIZES (see above) ARE SET BY CJSL AND CYSA. ONCE A ROSTER IS FULL, ANOTHER TEAM IS CREATED, PROVIDED THERE IS A COACH AVAILABLE AND AN ADEQUATE NUMBER OF PLAYERS. IF THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH PLAYERS, THE LAST PLAYER(S) WHO REGISTERED ARE GIVEN THE OPTION OF PLAYING FOR ANOTHER NEARBY SOCCER CLUB, OR WITHDRAWING THEIR REGISTRATION. MCSC MAKES EVERY EFFORT TO PROVIDE ALL MCSC REGISTRANTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FOR MCSC, BUT THIS IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE.
What are sandlot tryouts?
It is very important for players to come out to soccer sandlot tryouts as soon as they register. "Sandlot tryouts" are informal tryouts for players that start in August for players to participate in after they register in their respective U/6 U/8/U10/U12 age brackets. It allows them the opportunity to come to the fields and participate in skill drills and small sided games before teams are selected (teams are usually selected the week after school has started), as well as become more comfortable with other players and coaches. Mickey Cox Soccer Club has sandlot tryouts in August (prior to the start of school). These sandlots allow the parents an opportunity to register their players and it gives the players a chance to get onto the fields and sharpen their skills with players of like gender and ages. It also gives our coaches an opportunity to meet and evaluate the players.
Mickey Cox Soccer Club is a Recreational Club; we are not a competitive soccer program (see www.cjsl.info for more information about competitive programs and leagues). We do our best to place players on teams with other players of like ability. This allows every player the best experience and the most playing time.
I want my child to play with his/her friend and/or favorite coach.
The MCSC will make every effort to allow your child to play with friends or coaches that parents designate on the registration form. However, age, experience, and roster limits may not always make this possible. Playing on a team with "potential" friends is a way to make new relationships and acquaintances.
What size soccer ball does my player need?
U/6 and U/8 play with a size 3 ball. U/10 and U/12 play with a size 4 ball.
I want to coach. Whom do I contact?
You do not have to have played soccer to be a coach. The greatest gift you can offer is your time, effort and patience. Please contact our Commissioner Tom Grieco or MCSC President Jennifer Nakpiban (phone numbers on "Contacts" page) if you are interested in coaching. We do ask that all head coaches are a minimum of 18 years of age.
- All adults working with children need to fill out the online disclosure form.
- All coaches for U/6/8/10 need to obtain at least their “Pre-F” license. All coaches for U/12 need to obtain at least their “F” license. Please see the licensing clinic days and times on our website.
When are practices and games?
Practices dates and times are established by team coaches. Generally teams will practice twice a week; some younger teams (U/6) will practice one time per week. Practices for U/6 are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length. Practices for U/8 and up range from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on what the coach feels is necessary. Practices can be any day of the week M-F.
Games are played on Saturday during the morning and early afternoon at various schools within the Clovis Unified School District.
What does my child need to wear or purchase to play soccer?
They will need shin guards, which are mandatory to play in games and at practice. Soccer cleats are optional, but recommended. Be sure kids DO NOT wear baseball cleats with any metal spikes, as these are illegal in soccer. Wear loose fitting, play clothes that are appropriate for the weather to practice. It would be prudent to purchase a soccer ball to practice with at home and optionally bring to practice with them.
For games: Players need to wear the Mickey Cox Soccer Jersey top and shorts (provided to you by your coach), royal blue soccer socks, shin guards and appropriate shoes. Players cannot wear earrings, bracelets, watches or any metal hair clips. All jerseys and shorts (except for U6) are returned to the MCSC at the end of the season.
How long is the soccer season?
Please see our calendar on the website for exact start and finish dates for each of the age groups. Generally the season starts close to the first week of school and ends around Thanksgiving. Sandlot play begins two weeks before school starts.
What is my role as a parent of a soccer player?
First of all, the MCSC would cease to exist without parental involvement. There are many ways to contribute; team parent, working the snack bar, Saturday field monitor, field preparation, coaching (head and assistant), serving as a board member, and sponsorships are only a few ways to contribute. Contact any board member on the "Contact" page to find out how you can help!
We strictly adhere to the rules of CYSA (California Youth Soccer Association). All parents should conduct themselves in a positive, encouraging and uplifting manner at all times while attending games and practices. Soccer is for the kids. We strive to provide a safe and fun environment for our players. Please see the Parent and League Agreement Form
Can my child "play up" an age group?
Though permissible, it is rare for players to play up an age group. For a player to play up, there must be agreement between the board, the coaches, and the parent.
A player shall only be able to play up one birth year and may not displace a child who is age appropriate. (Example: A first year U8 cannot play at the U10 level; however a second year U8 may. A second year U8 player may not play up to U10 if any U10 player is turned away from that club due to lack of U10 team roster space.)
My child does not attend Mickey Cox, can she/he play for Mickey Cox?
Yes. If your child meets the age requirements and lives within Mickey Cox’s district, your child can play for The Mickey Cox Soccer Club.
If your child lives in another school’s district, or attends another school in CUSD, and you want your child to play for The Mickey Cox Soccer Club, you must first obtain written permission from that school’s soccer club. Contact Derek Boucher, our Registrar, for clarification.

What is the policy of MCSC regarding Air Quality and Hot Days?
MCSC will adhere to the policies of CUSD. CUSD does not have regulations that expressly relate to hot weather, but coaches have discretion to make whatever decisions are deemed in the best interest of athlete safety. This might include cancellation of practice or modifying the kinds of workouts.
Air Quality is different than the outside temperature and will be treated differently.
When the AQI is forecast to be between 100 and 149 (ORANGE - Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups), restrictions apply only to students with known respiratory problems.
CUSD Board Policy 2403 governs outdoor activities when the forecasted Air Quality Index (AQI) is 150 or higher (RED - Unhealthy). On Red days, it will be at each parents discretion as to whether or not their player will participate in the game or practice. Coaches may cancel practice. If teams are having practice only, then no prolonged conditioning exercises are allowed. Students with known respiratory problems are not to participate at all.
Generally, peak periods of unhealthy air occur in mid-late afternoon, and become less of an issue in the evening. Our coaches have been advised to modify their practices and reduce strenuous conditioning, endurance running, etc... These days are good for working on skills and chalk board talk. Also, players will be allowed frequent water breaks. All coaches will be advised of players on their teams with known respiratory issues.
